Many companies are unaware of the essential legal requirements for creating and running a corporate website. There are laws have been enforced that relate to the information provided on your website and the information obtained from your website.
A lot of businesses are unaware that all UK registered businesses must clearly display their business name, their full registered address, their registration number and their VAT number where suitable.
In 2011, the law was changed regarding cookies and the way that they can be used, all website owners must now ask visitors for their consent to track cookies. When asking for consent, it is a good idea to explain what you will use the cookies for, including what information you are gathering and what you will do with the information.
A valuable tool to have on your website is free downloads such as guides and information packs. Visitors will enter their contact details in order to download the pack and you are left with valuable contact information which can be used in your marketing campaigns. As far as the law in concerned, if a visitor enters their contact details, they automatically give you their consent to be contacted by your business. You must however, only send them emails that are relevant to the product or item they enquired about when submitting their details and you must offer them the option to unsubscribe in each email sent.
If you provide your contact details on your website, and a third party business collects your contact details, they are legally allowed to contact you via telephone or post for marketing purposes until you ask them to stop.
It is advisable to always include a disclaimer on your website such as a ‘disclaimer of liability’. You should state within the disclaimer that although all information on you website is to the best of your knowledge, it should not be taken as fact and errors can occur.
So why not check your site today to make sure it is legal to avoid breaking the law and to offer your customers an honest, detailed website that they can trust and go to for information and advice.
