Carports are becoming more and more popular particularly as the winters seem to be colder and snowier each year. A carport is therefore a great way to add extra value to your home particularly if you do not have the room or planning permission for a garage, a carport is the perfect solution. If you are trying to sell your home, a covered off road parking area is always a bonus to potential buyers and makes your home much more saleable and attractive to them.
There are however a few points to bear in mind when choosing a carport if you would like it to add value to your home:
The Construction Material
It is important that you choose a carport construction that not only aesthetically pleasing but also that will last for many, many years to come without rusting or rotting.
Timber carports are well known for rotting and therefore becoming unsafe if they are not treated regularly with wood treatment.
On the other hand, Aluminium carports are constructed from a robust strong material that offers a general life expectancy of up to 40 years, it will not rot or rust as it is naturally covered with a protective oxide film that makes it corrosion resistant. The Roof Material
The roof material also plays an important part in the look and life expectancy of your carport.
GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) which is commonly known as FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) is a composite laminate of glass fibres in a polyester resin matrix. These panels can discolour from the sun and turn yellow, they cannot withstand high impacts and is often hard to clean due to the rough surface.
Glass sheets can be very expensive to purchase and get installed, they have a low impact resistance and offer little or no UV protection. There is also a safety risk if the glass shatters, this is particularly not ideal if you have young children or pets that regularly play outside.
Polycarbonate has a very high impact resistance making it virtually unbreakable, offers high UV protection, has a low heat transmission (perfect for keeping cars cool in the summer), has a 25 year life expectancy, its cost effective and maintains strength and a clean look over time.
The General Appearance
The general appearance of the carport is what you need to think about once you have chosen the highest quality construction available within your budget. The appearance is important as you need to ensure the carport matches your current exterior.
The colour can play a big part, if you have a colour coded exterior with say blue window frames, a canopy finished in the same blue would fit in perfectly and make the carport look like it was made for the house.
Also if your house has a more traditional appearance or maybe is a very old house then a sharp edged, contemporary canopy would not look right, however a traditional style canopy would look perfect and again, it would look as though the carport was made bespoke to your home. The Victorian upgrade transforms a modern canopy into a traditional Victorian looking canopy.
I hope this post has helped you on your way to finding the perfect carport that will add extra value to your home and provide you with a covered outdoor space that will benefit you for many years to come.
