As the hot summer approaches, we are all reminded about taking care of ourselves in the hot sun. UV radiation is linked to many health concerns including skin and eye damage.
Even a short period in the sun every day, without adequate precautions, can place a person at risk. Yet your customers won’t want to miss the wonderful weather and that’s why everyone needs to consider the appropriate precautions.
How UV Radiation Can Cause Damage
There are many ways that UV radiation can damage your skin, it can prematurely age your skin, cause wrinkles, sunburn and be a significant contributor to skin cancer.
UV radiation can also cause photokeratitis which is the sunburn of the eye. This is often painful, but the effects are not permanent. However, long term eye damage can result such as cataracts and damage to the retina.
Most At Risk
We don’t all have the same risk factors. There are certain medications that can increase the risk of UV damage; especially those on antibiotics and blood pressure medication.
People are also more at risk if they are near sand, water, or snow as these can reflect the damaging rays.
Ways To Protect From UV Radiation
There are many ways to protect a person from UV radiation. Sun cream is a common option, but this needs to be applied thirty minutes before going out and reapplied every two hours. Another tactic is to avoid going outside during the most dangerous times between 10 am and 4 pm.
Everyone should also pay attention to the sun index. It is rated between 1 and 10. If the rating for any day is 10 or 10+, people should stay inside as much as possible.
